Archive for December, 2008

Adios, 2008! Welcome 2009…

Another year is about to go by, as all others did before it, leaving us with an admixture of pleasant and unpleasant memories …

As per the practiced custom, people will be gathering tonight at many places like star hotels and other fun-spots , or at the houses of their friends for what is popularly flaunted as ‘Ushering in The New Year’ !

Now take a moment to ponder…
In what way will tomorrow , the 1st January 2009   be different from today, the 31st December 2008?

The sun will rise in the east , the birds will wake you up in the morning with their songs and chirping, the adults will  get ready to go to their offices , the kids will throw up tantrums when woken up  to go to the school, the stray dogs will be out on the streets  to puke on the lamp posts with the same abandon that they showed yesterday … , and so on and so on…the list goes on!

Then, for what purpose are these special events organised during the night of 31st December 2008? Or for that matter any December 31st?  Beats me!

It all appears to be a sham, just  to enable  the ‘haves’ to part with a piece of their stashed away fortunes… . To give them an excuse to throw away some more of the good  stuff down the drain for a hyped-up  cause… the annual extravaganza called ‘Ushering  in the New Year’!

They gather in droves at popular pleasure spots by nightfall , rubbing their hands in glee , wade in and drink like a fish , holler like demented souls steeped in drunken stupor,  pour beer after beer on their  fellow-reveler’s head and then transform themselves  into frenzied banshees as the ‘clock man’ raises his hands to strike the  much-awaited hour!

And what do they gain  in the process  ? A god-awful hangover the next day and …ahem…perhaps …some ‘miss-taken’  id ‘entities’

Mobile phones have taken over the lives of both  adults and ‘non-adults’ in the recent times. People feel they can’t do without them… You may well chance upon  an otherwise well dressed  gentleman   hurrying  down the road to his office  without his pants on… But look closer, he will definitely be holding a tiny gadget to his ear, talking away to kingdom come…!
Also, the increased use of cell phones while driving has now sent the road accident statistics to dizzying heights…

The ‘mobiles’ have influenced every aspect of our lives as no other electronic ‘thiggummy’ has ever done in the past . In the process of bringing a ‘revolution’ in the field of communication,  SMS’s, ‘blue’ video clips and obscene  messages  now fly through the ‘ether’  ( or what  we now call ‘blue tooth’ ) back and forth , between friends, lovers, kids ,  men and women, day and night. The cell phone companies encourage this by offering enticing packages to the users, mindless of what untold harm they are causing to the society. A fast buck is all that they are after…

And the cell phone camera is the ultimate instrument of terror. Initially conceived as a sleek ad-on,  the male students  now use them to ‘shoot’  their class mates ( read girls ) and morph the pictures into tools of torture for blackmailing.  There were a few recent cases reported in the Kerala Press about school boys catching their classmates in compromising positions for blackmail and consequently driving  the poor things to take their lives…

Schools are now seriously considering banning camera phones inside their premises . However, they are facing strong opposition from some  parents and kids, accusing them of denying  a means of contacting each other in case of emergencies… ( only,  the kids say that with their tongue in the cheek 😉

There are pros and cons for this move ,  depending upon  from where you look at the matter…However  there seems to be  no totally acceptable solution to the problem in sight as of now !
My only fervent prayer to God Almighty is that in the days to come, may He not make things more difficult for all by sending the newborns  this way…

Tonight, as I type out this blog , it is the Christmas Eve.. To night is the night when all the kids of the world expect dear Santa Claus to pay a secret visit to their homes and leave some goodies behind while they are fast asleep…

To night is the night….

But will he come this year? I doubt it… What is it in this world of today that we can offer him , to make him feel good when he comes visiting ? Terrorism ? Extremism ? Cold-blooded Murders ? Bombings ?   Massacres of innocents  ?  Child molestations? What is there?

Santa tonight must be  a very sad and depressed man…there is nothing much left here in our world that he stands for …there is no love, no compassion, no cheer …The poor guy can’t even buy the gifts for his beloved kids because of the economic recession… If at all he has to come , he has to come empty-handed… but will he at all come? As I said,  I doubt it!

Sorry kids ,  all I can do is to wish you a Merry Christmas , without any gifts from your dear old Santa …to all of you out there…

And what do you think poor Santa is doing right now ?

One of the tyre manufacturing companies in Kerala  has declared a lock out recently due to labour problems…the bane of Kerala industry…  !

We are a hard-working lot once we cross the shores…But within the confines of our own home state, we seem to undergo a metamorphosis that will shame a caterpillar ! We don’t work as hard – sometimes don’t work at all –  as we did abroad. We start insisting that we want wages and perks for the work we don’t do or are not prepared to do. Not only we do not work, we also prevent others from working !

Agitation in the form of ‘bandhs’, ‘hartals’, processions and strikes is the only language spoken here…No wonder  outsiders are wary to start industries here…No wonder we lost the Nokia and Benz factories to Tamilnadu…But we of course are not much concerned!

It looks like the only industry that can possibly hope to  survive here is the one that does not employ more than one person.
In a lighter vein, if you want to start any industry here I would  recommend something like this , that is if you can escape the wrath of the ever-vigilant eyes of our SPCA blokes …>one-man-industry

After the recent Mumbai massacre it was pretty well suspected that some people in Pakistan had a hand in it. All because one of the terrorists was caught alive and  sang like a canary…or so we hear.
When the dastardly act was finally traced  to Pakistan’s door steps by the Indian investigating agency   India  demanded that certain people staying there and suspected to be behind the incident should be handed over.
When Pakistan hemmed and hawed, India took the matter to the UN and the international pressure was brought on . This helped to force  Pakistan’s hands to take some strong , visible  action to bring the culprits to book. Condoleeza Rice also applied her pretty shoulders to the wheel …
Shortly after wards news broke out that Pakistan had started taking some action …And as is their wont, the media made a mountain out of the molehill..but, before they could say ‘terrorist’  President Zardari turned a volt-face …

That probably was expected since the continued existence of the democratically elected government in Pakistan  is very tenuous  with the Army breathing down their neck and watching their every move. Despite the International pressure, this government wouldn’t have done  anything to upset the apple cart.

No wonder Zardari did what he did…  let us now console ourselves that just to  make everyone involved look more silly he at least didn’t do this  …>rice-delivery
